The Serbian military cemetery in Thessaloniki, built in the area of Zejtinlik (former Turkish market) where the Main Military Hospital for the Serbian Army has been located since 1916. and which included a cemetery for deceased fighters, was designed with the idea of burying in a common cemetery for all the fallen warriors on the Thessaloniki front. Preparations for the endeavor to build a joint memorial ossuary began in 1926. with the organization of a competition for the mausoleum of fallen Serbian warriors and the collection of remains in a wide area where fighting was taking place on the Thessaloniki front. Milan Zloković also took part in the competition for the memorial ossuary, whose conceptual design was based on a combination of a fortification structure in a massive rustic pedestal and a neo-Byzantine shape of the upper zone finished with a dome and imbued with several suggestive elements from expressionist vocabulary. The transition between the lower and upper zones is solved by inserting a gable frame on all sides of the central symmetrical body. The inventiveness of Zloković’s solution was reflected in the combination and superposition of several stylistically different parts into one coherent whole.

Saint Sava Temple

The most prominent Serbian architects participated in the second competition with the memorial temple of Saint Sava in Vračar, announced in 1926, among whom Milan Zloković and the Russian architect Andrej Vasiljevič Papkov performed with a joint competition work, which, according to the jury, was the redemption prize. The competition notice was looking for a monumental temple in the Serbian-Byzantine style from the time of Prince Lazar, which could accommodate six thousand believers. Their solution of the temple with a base in the form of an inscribed concise cross has been noticed in architectural historiography by a unique, organically conceived, shaped treatment based on the gradation of semicircular volumes and surfaces in combination with several hemispheres and a central dome. An expressionist effect was achieved on such a diverse composition with a touch of visionary aspirations in which the original approach and modernized stylization can be distinguished. Zloković believed that the Church of Saint Sava, as a single artistic whole, should be conceived freely and without restrictions, “through the prism of the modern understanding of art and life”, because only in that way would it represent “a true expression of people’s gratitude to its first educator”.

Home for the disabled in Mali Kalemegdan

The competition work for the building of the Home for the Disabled in Mali Kalemegdan is a lesser-known Zloković project from an earlier period of creativity, which is now available to researchers in the archive collection of Milan Zloković at the Belgrade City Museum. Created in the year of the formation of the Group of Architects of the Modern Direction (1928), this project testifies to a more complete acceptance of modernist aesthetics and morphological principles in the conception of a massive building with a block structure. The shape of the combined-use building – business and collective housing – is characterized by a fully geometric cube with a regular grid of square window openings ranging from the first to the fourth floor that extends along two street facades, while the ground floor area, where business facilities are planned, is fully open with a series of glazed shop windows, which achieved a visual relief of the upper zone and suggested a connection with the urban space. One of the street facades has a convexly curved surface which gives the massive volume an expressive effect. The corner where the two street facades meet is accentuated by a decorative relief vertical from the first to the third floor, which marks the position of the building.

Maritime Museum

The conceptual solution for the Maritime Museum in Split continues Zloković’s consideration of modernist design, in this project, focused on the relations of architectural elements according to the set structure – strip windows, corner balconies, divided facade beams and corner mast. In relation to the planned plot, the building is set as free-standing, and its base geometry and structure volumetry derive from the shape of the plot, so that one side of the building got a polygonal shape resulting from the composition of two cubic buildings of different heights. Although the organization did not have a freer approach in relation to the purpose of the building, the geometry of the base and shaped components of the facades contributed to a more rounded modernist expression, especially when it comes to accentuating the structure with corner striped windows, corner balconies and recessed entrance marked with protruding vertical circle carrying a flagpole. The dynamism and expressiveness of the form is additionally emphasized by the polychromy of the window frames, the divided zones between the windows and the façade beams, which are so accentuated in relation to the white façade surfaces.

A notable conceptual solution from Zloković’s early modernist phase is the competition work for arranging the Terazije Terrace in Belgrade, considered a space of significant urban-architectural intervention in the central city zone. Zloković’s work Terazije Terrace, i.e., the Belgrade Fair, was published in the collection on modern architecture, “You need to know … the progress of civil engineering. Problems of Contemporary Architecture”, edited in 1932. by the Zagreb architect Stjepan Planić. Using the leveling of the terrain of the river Sava amphitheater, Zloković places the mega structure of the Belgrade Fair, conceived as a city business center, in a block space with an inner courtyard and bordered streets. The gradation of the volumes of the massive structure, with the variation of the shape of the base and the organization of its masses is adjusted to the lowering of the terrain and the course of movement from the Terazije area to Kraljice Natalije Street. The dominant modernist approach is represented in the design, which achieves a rational appearance, characteristic to modern industrial facilities. “Excellent balance of simplified masses” – that is how the architect Đurđe Bošković commented on Zloković’s project for the Terazije terrace.

Palace of the Privileged Agrarian Bank

The competition work for the Palace of the Privileged Agrarian Bank in Belgrade is a lesser-known Zloković design from an earlier period of creativity, which is now available to researchers in the Milan Zloković Collection at the Belgrade City Museum. The bank building is designed as a corner block building in whose interpolation – by changing the height, stepwise indentation of volume and different treatment of facade surfaces – Zloković stratifies the facade surfaces creating the impression of a corner street sequence with several units. Zloković develops the internal organization of the space symmetrically in relation to the axis of the corner, achieving a somewhat freer and more open plan, especially at the level of the basement and ground floor, where spaces for working with clients are provided.

Railway station in Skopje

The competition work for the building of the Railway Station in Skopje is one of the lesser-known Zloković’s projects from the earlier period of his work, which is now available to researchers in the Milan Zloković Collection at the Belgrade City Museum.. Using previous experience in working on models of smaller railway stations, in order to give these facilities a modern architectural expression, Zloković is designing a modern railway station with three platform islands for Skopje. This competition design belongs to a small group of modern traffic terminals designed in Yugoslavia between the two world wars. The new traffic terminals – railway stations and then airports – were the embodiment of development and modernity, so they found themselves as an indispensable design theme in European modern architecture. Opening the exhibition of the Zagreb architect Juraj Neidhardt in Belgrade on June 29, 1937, at which the Lindental Award-winning airport project was also exhibited, Zloković, then assistant professor at the Technical Faculty, emphasized the importance of the exhibited works for the domestic environment and especially for architects, pointing to Neidhardt originality in solving architectural and urban problems.

State Printing House

Among the architectural competitions that were announced for state institutions in Belgrade during the 1930s, was the competition for the State Printing House from 1933, in which many leading Yugoslav architects participated. The need for new civil service facilities most often arose due to insufficient or inadequate space capacity, which was the case with the State Printing House, which operated in several facilities and whose main building in Pop Luka Street was scheduled for demolition due to the construction of an access street to the future Bridge of King Alexander I. As a result, a competition was announced for the new building of the printing house in April 1933, and a plot near the Kalenić market (between Njegoševa and Mileševska streets) was determined for the location. Later, new locations were chosen for the implementation of the first awarded work, although different urban parameters of the original location were relevant in the preparation of the competition designs. For that reason, Zloković’s solution tends to be more horizontal and with lower structure, which consists of two functional units. The parallelopiped shape of the front volume is dynamized by beveling the sides of the rear body and placing a roof canopy on the retracted top floor. In this project, too, Zloković remains consistent in examining the proportional relationships of window openings in relation to the whole structure and its surface, in this case by combining three different opening heights in a repeated vertical rhythm (A-A-B-C), which in relation to long strip windows or curtain wall, which Zloković never used in its architecture, gives the possibility for form expression and spatial modulation using geometric rules.

State Postage Stamp Printing Factory

The competition work for the building of the State Postage Stamp Printing Factory in Belgrade is one of the lesser-known Zloković projects from the mature period of creativity, which is now available to researchers in the Milan Zloković Collection at the Museum of the City of Belgrade. The state markarnica, an institution where postage and tax stamps and other securities were printed, was located before the Second World War in low barracks in the area at the foot of Senjak (on the corner of Vojvode Mišića Boulevard and Ruska Street). On the nearby empty plot, the construction of a new marker building is planned, for which a competition was announced in 1936. The competition envisaged the construction of the main building, which would have a basement, ground floor and three floors, and would be located on the lower plot along the main street, and a villa for the director, several residential buildings for marker employees and a kindergarten for children of employees in the area of the upper plot (behind the main building, on the corner of Ruska and Nova streets). According to this program, Zloković also elaborates his solution in which a specific prose of rationalist evocation is recognized. The architecture of the main building, the focus of the project, is dominated by the structure of the main facade membrane in relation to the internal organization and the height stratification of the building towards the second plot, i.e., residential buildings.

Yugoslav Pavilion in Paris

From the first national festivals organized in the middle of the 19th century to large international manifestations of economic and social significance within the 20th century, world exhibitions represented an experimental field for numerous areas of economic and technical development, as well as for the scope of architectural creation. The architecture of the exhibition pavilions had a multifaceted role, often directed towards the placement of new ideas and progressive aspirations. The competition work for the Yugoslav Pavilion at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937 is one of Zloković’s lesser-known projects from the mature period of creativity, which is now available to researchers in the Milan Zloković Collection at the Museum of the City of Belgrade. At the beginning of his career, in the mid-1920s, Zloković designed the Pavilion (shop) of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes at the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris and the Pavilion of the Kingdom of SCS for the exhibition in Philadelphia, whose architectural concepts were marked by more traditional forms inspired by Balkan folk architecture, while the exhibition pavilion in Paris in 1937 represents a modernly structured exhibition space divided into several levels connected into a single fluid whole imbued with changes in height and thus with experiences of space. The pavilion is given an introverted character while its external appearance makes it a simple prismatic volume.
